College Campus Punjab Medical College Faisalabad Pakistan

Punjab Medical College is famous for its beautiful building, greenery which includes beautifully built gardens containing flowers and trees of almost all sorts. The campus is one of its types. The best thing about the campus is the corridor which has become more of a land mark. One can get a clear view of the college including all the departments while standing at one corner, looking at the other. We get out of the hostel, cross the Sargodha road, enter the gate, take a few steps, and we first of all come across the Dissection Hall, then comes the Anatomy Cage, to its left is the gate for the Anatomy Department and to its right is the entrance for Forensic and Community Medicine Department. Reaching the middle of the corridor gives us a view of Physiology Department (left) and Bio-chemistry Department (right). Moving still further makes us stand in the middle of Pharmacology Department (left) and Pathology Department (right). Then comes the Admin Cage, to its left is the Library and Computer Resource Lab and to its right is the Administration Block. We take a route for the Café passing from in between the Pathology and the Bio-chemistry Departments, to its left is the Bus Stop and to its right is the Examination Hall. Going straight would lead us to the Allied Hospital.

The College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan

The College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan was established in mid-1962 with the objectives of maintaining high principles of medical profession, promotion of specialists' medical practice and arrangement of postgraduate medical training in hospitals. It is the only postgraduate medical institution in the country that has established a system of effective and consistent up-gradation of medical education and training.

The main functions of the College are:
The promotion of the practice of general medicine, surgery and other specialties, and conduct examinations for the award of postgraduate fellowship/diploma of FCPS and MCPS.

The College offers admission to the Fellowship of the College in 53 specialties/ sub-specialties and MCPS in 10 specialties. The College has now discontinued its Membership diploma program and replaced it with the Diploma of the College, DCPS, offering it in 14 specialties. The first examination of DCPS is scheduled on 2 March 2006. The College organizes postgraduate training of the candidates in accredited/recognized hospitals throughout the country and conducts subsequent examinations. To achieve its objectives, the Council of the College has constituted four Committees to work for continued expansion and progress of this College. The College not only encourages qualitative expansion of the curriculum but also of education, associated teachers, supervisors, advisory services, monitoring and evaluation of training, teaching methodologies and examination system. Upto March 2004 5744 MCPS and 5972 FCPS have graduated from this College. In order to improve the overall educational and research methodology, the College regularly holds a variety of workshops and courses. Upto March 2004 the College has held 1667 programs which benefited about 25,000 senior medical professionals and allied healthcare personnel. The CPSP provides learning facilities to other medical institutions as well. As part of these activities and to determine the needs and bases for continuing medical education program, the CPSP also holds national and international conferences and joint meetings with sister institutions. These scientific discussions help in bringing the fellows, academicians and medical experts at a joint forum to exchange experience in different fields of medical science. On March 7, 2004, the College held a joint meeting with Bangladesh College of Physicians and Surgeons at Karachi in which over 300 delegates from Bangladesh and 1000 from Pakistan participated. This event contributed a great deal in the advancement of medical science in both the countries.

History - Shifa at a Glance - Islamabad - Pakistan

The Hospital was incorporated on September 20, 1987 as a Private Limited Company and converted into Public Limited Company on October 12, 1989. The first Shifa office was established at the residence of Dr. Zaheer Ahmad in sector F-8/3 of Islamabad. Later it was moved to a rental place in Blue Area (commercial buildings area in Islamabad), and finally the site office building was established in January 1988.

The construction activity to prepare the site for laying the foundation of the Hospital was started in the beginning of 1988. The foundation ceremony took place on October 06, 1989 by the parents and well-wishers of the sponsors and their dedicated team of colleagues and well- wishers. Within three years and six months, the hospital’s Block-A structure of 65 ft. high with 70,000 square feet covered area.

The idea of developing a high class medical facility in Pakistan was conceived in New York, USA in the mid of 1985. The initiator Dr. Zaheer Ahmad, who had just finished his Internal Medicine Residency, called a meeting at his apartment in Brooklyn, New York on the weekend of July 20 & 21. Five professionals gathered there and discussed the idea in detail and approved it. The participants included Dr. Manzoor H. Qazi from Leesville, Louisiana, Mr. Muhammad Zahid from Kew Gardens, New York, Mr. Samiulla Sharief from Brooklyn, New York, Dr. Sabir Ali from Palm Bay, Florida besides the host. Dr. Zaheer Ahmad was asked to prepare the feasibility report and the action plan. Subsequently Dr. Zaheer Ahmad moved to Islamabad on December 17, 1985 to start the work on this project.

After extensive discussions and many meetings, the present site in the capital city of Islamabad was selected for this project. The name "SHIFA" was approved because of its comprehensiveness, originating from our culture, belief and values in totality.

After acquiring over 11 acres of land in Islamabad in 1987, CRI, a hospital development company in Princeton, New Jersey was hired to develop the plan and design of the project. Mr. William Parker, Chief Architect of CRI headed the team, visited the site in Islamabad besides visiting the other hospitals across Pakistan. CRI finished its job in 1989.

The hospital’s team (founders and sponsors) kept expanding from all across the globe. By the time of its opening on June 26, 1993, it had crossed 400 plus sponsors, with a Rupee 500 million equity. Till this time the Hospital has not borrowed a single rupee from any other source.

Within three and half years, the Hospital's Block-A with a five storey structure, plus deck slab area and a mosque with a total 100,000 square feet covered area was ready to take its first patient on June 26, 1993. Medical equipment were installed in the areas of Radiology, Radiation Oncology, Laboratories, Operating Rooms, Dialysis and ICU/CCU. The building was fully equipped with all modern means i.e. central air conditioning, central gas supply systems, fire-alarm system, 750 KVA standby generator etc.

The humble start of June 26, 1993, with eight consultants in seven specialties, has progressed to more than 70 highly qualified consultants in almost all specialties under one roof. Shifa International Hospital offers 150 IPD beds with quality care and OPD facility in 35 different specializations. Nevertheless it is an unending journey. People at Shifa are continuously striving hard to bring improvement and novelty with every passing moment.

Now after more than one and a half decade Shifa International Hospital proudly stands as a symbol of quality healthcare with its own brand name "SHIFA". The short history of Shifa witnessed rare dedication and devotion of its consultants, management and staff who worked round the clock to make Shifa a reality of its own.

It was the vision of the founding Sponsors which took its shape into reality. The task was made possible only with the help of their dedicated team of experts and managers under the quality-oriented and inspiring leadership.

Today, the hospital’s Block-A along with Block-B and partially constructed Block-C and Block-G sprawled on its site is efficiently functioning with already finished covered area of 315000 square feet. Last but not the least, as well as first and the foremost, is the grace of Allah which has made it feasible and viable for us to carry out such a gigantic and enormous venture. Unique in its concept and efforts by the expatriate Pakistanis to repay back their homeland with a beautiful gift and a functional institution in the healthcare industry of Pakistan.

Islamabad
Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan, is located in the Potohar Plateau in the northwest of the country. The city was built during the 1960s to replace Karachi as Pakistan's capital. Rawalpindi is considered its sister city due to the close proximity of the two cities. Islamabad is a modern city; it is well-organized, with the city being divided into different sectors and zones, each with its own shopping areas and parks.

Islamabad, being the capital of the country is home to federal parliament (National Assembly and Senate), Supreme Court, President's Secretariat, Prime Minister's Secretariat, and federal ministries, corporate offices of all major public and private, national and multinational organizations.

History
The nascent city of Islamabad is preceded by thousands of years of history. This is the site of one of the earliest human settlements in Asia, and is at one end of the ancient Indus Valley Civilization. Near Islamabad is a site where there are stone implements made on a mass scale which were sent down to the lower reaches of the Indus river. This area was the first settlement of the Aryans from Central Asia and is on the route through which passed all those who invaded India from the North and North West. The very large number of languages still spoken in the Northern Areas is evidence of the different races that passed through what is now the federal area. This region has witnessed the passage of ancient caravans from Central Asia including armies of Alexander the Great and Amir Taimoor (Tamurlane). The banks of the River Soan in Islamabad were host to stone-age man over 7000 years ago and human skulls dating back to 5000 B.C. have been found in and around Islamabad

University of Jamshoro - Sindh - Pakistan

The University of Sindh, the second oldest University of the country, was constituted under the University of Sindh Act. No. XVII of 1947 passed by the Legislative Assembly of Sindh. The Act was subsequently revised and modified in 1961 and later. The Act of 1972 under which the University is presently functioning provided for greater autonomy and representation of teachers.

From 1947 to 1951 the University functioned solely as an examining body. However, after its relocation in Hyderabad in 1951, it started functioning as a teaching university in pursuit of fulfillment of its charter and mission to disseminate knowledge; the first teaching department, namely, Department of Education, raised to the status of Faculty of Education later, was started in view of the great dearth of trained teachers in the country. The departments of basic Science disciplines as well as other departments on humanities side were added by mid fifties.

The development of the present Campus at Jamshoro, about 15 kilometer from Hyderabad on the right bank of River Indus now designated as Allama I.I. Kazi Campus, was started in late fifties. Most of the teaching departments under the Faculty of Science were shifted to the new campus in 1961, with departments under Arts & Humanities following suite in 1970.

The academic march forward continued with the gradual addition of other teaching departments and now there are 43 full-fledged teaching institutes/centres/departments functioning under various academic Faculties. Institute of Biotechnology & Genetic Engineering and Centre for Environmental Sciences are the latest addition.

There are presently 4 Law Colleges and 74 Degree and Post Graduate Colleges (including 16 Private Colleges) affiliated to the University.

Programs of Studies:
Academic Faculties of the University impart teaching leading to the Bachelor (Honours) and Master degrees and provide research guidance for the M.Phil and Ph.D. programs. The teaching and research under the Faculties of Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, Arts, Education, Islamic Studies, Commerce & Business Administration is directly imparted by the University.

Each Faculty works under the Dean, appointed by the Chancellor for a term of 3 years. The University teaching departments, institutes and centres offer programs leading to the award of 3- year Bachelor’s (Honours) degree in various general and basic disciplines on Humanities side while 4- year Bachelor degree is offered under the Faculty of Natural Sciences. The degrees have been redesignated accordingly indicating discipline e.g for Computer Science BC (CS) and Information Technology BS(IT) etc.

The Masters’ degree programs are of 1- year duration after Honours and of 2 -year duration after Bachelor (Pass) degrees.

The 2- year Bachelor’s (Pass) degree programs are conducted through various affiliated Degree Colleges within the jurisdiction of the University.

The teaching under the Faculty of Law is conducted through the affiliated professional Law colleges.

Degree programs in the Evening shift introduced since 2002 include Masters degrees in English and Information Technology- related disciplines such as E-commerce and Multimedia Technology.

Many teaching departments under various Faculties of the University also offer Postgraduate 1 year Diploma as well as short term Certificate programs.

Some of the degree colleges in private sector and affiliated to the University, also offer 3-year, Hons. & Master’s programs.
