Building Interaction Into Your Online Course

You've already decided that you're ready to author online and you have your content organized. Now it's time to face the ultimate challenge in online learning - making it interactive!

Interaction in online courses is a two-edged sword. On one hand you want students to participate. This enhances their learning by letting them question and discuss issues in the course. On the other hand, as the instructor, you need to decide the level of interaction you want to have with each student - and build your courses accordingly.

As an illustration, let me relate a poor choice I made in a course I wrote several years ago. Because I wanted everyone involved, I required that each student post at least one message per week to the discussion group. In addition, I required that they respond to two other messages. Simple? Yes. But because I had decided that my level of involvement was to respond to every posting, I was faced with 3 messages for every student every week - and this was only the minimum requirement! I soon found myself bogged down in responding to an overwhelming number of messages.

To decide on your level of involvement, let's look at 5 levels of interactions you can provide.

1. Respond to every email. At this level of interaction, you are reading and responding to every email or discussion sent. Beware. While this may be effective at the beginning of a discussion when there is little interaction, you'll soon be overwhelmed just responding to and encouraging students.

2. Respond to every nth email. This is a more rational view. Here you can decide to pick every 5th posting and respond to it. The danger is that you'll miss a student's best posting or that you'll miss an important question.

3. Respond to 1 message per student per week. You can set the expectation that you'll welcome questions from everyone, but that you'll only guarantee a response to one per week. That will put the burden of composing an effective message on the student's shoulders, rather than just jotting off a quick question every time they think of it.

4. Post provocative questions. This is a great way to get a discussion started. If you choose this route, you may choose not to participate in the discussion yourself - but instead, just summarize it at the end - or not.

5. Employ help. This may be a Teaching Assistant, a mentor, students who have taken the course in the past, etc. You may also choose to separate the types of correspondence - for example, one person may cover technical questions, while another handles course mechanics and you take the content questions.

Now that you've decided on your level of involvement, it's time to design the exercises. Recognize that almost any type of exercise you use in face-to-face training has an online counterpart. So be creative - and try your ideas. You can even ask your fellow instructors for help by saying "In an instructor-led course we would do such-and-such for this lesson. What would you suggest we use to replicate that learning online?"

Keep in mind that the format of the course you are creating will help determine the appropriateness of an interactive exercise. For example, if you have a rolling enrollment, self-paced course where students sign up and work through the materials at their own pace, it may be difficult to assign them team activities.

To get you started here are some ideas for interactive exercises. These cover a variety of levels of interaction, so choose your favorites.

Polls and surveys - ask a series of questions, then summarize the results for the participants. This can be done with a survey tool or you can use a multiple choice exam. Poll early and often. Your first poll might be the type of computer participants use, how they connect to the Internet, and their level of expertise in computer skills. This provides good feedback to you and gives them a profile of the "average" student.

Go and do - give students an assignment to do offline. Then ask them to come back and use one of the other techniques (reflection, chat, summaries) to report on their activities.

Read and react - give students an article, a series of websites, or other assignment. Then ask them to write a short reaction paper based on their readings.

Reflection - ask each student to use their personal note space to reflect on reading/group discussions.

3-word summary - ask each student to summarize their thoughts in 3 words in the discussion group. Others can ask for clarification.

Teams - use teams to create small discussion groups. Then ask one person from each team to summarize the discussion in the larger discussion area.

Office hours - use a chat to hold weekly office hours. Just tell everyone when you'll be "in", then wait for the questions. As an alternative you may decide to offer a chat time to a smaller group or team of students - either to encourage more interaction or to handle what would have been an overwhelming amount of interaction.

Expert panel - invite one or more experts to participate in a live event such as a video or audio conference. Take questions from the audience. Then continue the discussion with the discussion group. If possible, invite the experts to participate in the discussion.

You will continue to discover new interactive exercises that you use with your courses. For a full course on the topic, send an email to elearning@TechTamers.com

How to Choose a School in Dubai - United-Arab-Emirates

There are a large number of primary and secondary schools from which you can choose. One of the best way to ask around because of the number of experts in Dubai.

Most schools are private fee paying schools and really the best way to get an idea of the reputation of a school is to ask friends, colleagues and other experts who live in Dubai. Many of the schools also have their own websites where you can learn about the curriculum they follow, after school programs etc.

When it comes to enrolling your child in the UAE there are a few restrictions you should be aware of. For example you are not allowed to change your child school during the academic year unless approval is given by the Ministry of Education and the circumstances are special.

Consider the following points to choose a school for your child:

Does the school have a good reputation and how long has it been established?
Does the school have a good academic record? What percentages of its pupils obtain examination passes and go on to higher education?M
What does the curriculum include?
Which country's curriculum is followed?
Which examinations are set? Are the examinations recognized overseas, particularly in your country of origin? Do they fit in with your child's future educational plans? Ask to see a typical pupil's timetable to check the ratio of academic to non-academic subjects.
Check the number of free study periods and the level of supervision.
What's the teacher/pupil ratio?
What standard of teaching equipment is in regular use, e.g. projection and visual aids, computer hardware and types of software?
Is computer training available?
Which countries do most of the pupils come from?
Does religion play a part in the school?
Are intensive English or Arabic lessons provided for children who don't reach the required standard. (Arabic is unlikely to be mandatory in foreign schools).
What language lessons are available?
What are the qualification requirements for teachers? What nationalities are the majority of the teachers? Ask for a list of the teaching staff and their qualifications.
What is the teacher turnover? A high teacher turnover can be a bad sign and sometimes suggests poorly paid teachers and/or poor working conditions, although staff turnover in the region is rapid in many professions.
What kind of discipline and punishment are applied and for which offences?
What type of school reports are provided and how often?
What sports instruction and facilities are provided? Where are the facilities located?
What sort of school trips are organized? Are they always properly supervised?
Is transport to and from school provided? Is there teacher supervision on the buses?
What security arrangements are in place? What about the pickup of children at the end of school?
What medical facilities are provided? Where are the nearest clinics and hospitals?
What are the school terms and holidays?
What are the fees and when are they payable?
What extras must you pay for? These can include food, art supplies, sports equipment, excursions, uniforms and clothing, health and accident insurance, text books and stationery.
What are the withdrawal conditions, should you wish or need to remove your child? A term's notice is usually required. You're likely to have paid some form of financial deposit when your child begins at the school and this will cover the school in the case of withdrawal.
You should also monitor your child's progress and listen to his views regarding schools.

Jinnah Hospital - An Introduction Pakistan

When the name Jinnah is mentioned strengths like dedication, commitment, hard work and selfless service come to mind. Named after the Father of Nation, Quaid-e-Azam, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, this hospital has strong history of serving hundreds of thousands of poor and deserving patients from all over Pakistan.

This important health institution that has been providing services to the very poor localities of our country for the last one decade. It was made autonomous in year 2002. The result has been a perfect amalgamation of public-private partnership alleviating the suffering of the poor. Jinnah Hospital's motto "DIGNITY IN SERVICE", is a reflection of the vision held by our great leader Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah.

Spread over 105 acres and with 1100 beds, Jinnah is the second largest teaching hospital in the Punjab. It is the first autonomous hospital that has been properly built according to a premeditated design with three main areas. First there is a residential area for doctors, students and for the first time a rest area by the name of "Sarai" where the relatives of the patients can find temporary lodgings. The on one end is the Hospital and the third area is the Allama Iqbal Medical College.

Being strategically placed near the Motorway, Jinnah is official Hospital where all major or minor accident cases from the Motorway are brought. A majority of patients at Jinnah come from the surrounding poor suburbs like Bhai Pheru, Pattoki, Raiwind and all the near villages. Jinnah also caters to the southern localities of Lahore as well as southern Punjab.

Jinnah is a teaching hospital as well. With 1416 students studying to be doctors at Allama Iqbal Medical College and learning practical procedures at Jinnah, over 7,000 doctors have graduated from here over the last ten years.

Jinnah Hospital has provided all the services and facilities under one roof. It has a team of 65 consultant physicians & surgeons which are among the top ranking professionals in the country. It has all departments like Gynae & Obs, Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, Laboratory and General Surgery. What makes Jinnah stand out among the other public hospitals is additional departments like Oncology, Radiology, Plastic Surgery, Dermatology, Urology, Neurosurgery.

Jinnah Hospital's services in terms of equipment also make it shine. Complete pathology tests & scans including x-rays, ultrasound, mammography & CT-Scan are performed here. There are certain services, machines and equipment which, although easily available in the private sector are too expensive to purchase or maintain in the public sector. Jinnah Hospital has an edge over the other public hospitals in having certain machinery like a Radiotherapy Machine (Cobalt 60) which is functional in Jinnah Hospital only although Mayo hospital has one as well. Also Jinnah Hospital is the only public hospital equipped with a Mammography machine.

What is given above is just the tip of the iceberg. Jinnah's scale of services & facilities is difficult to fathom. With a management that has the sense to make the best of its autonomy, a highly dedicated and qualified staff, latest facilities and the will to serve the poor, Jinnah is there to serve and to continue serving for decades to come.

Being the Hospital for the people and by the people, Jinnah like all Trusts & Public Hospitals need support. An average of 550,000 patients visit the Out-Patient and Emergency Department every year, where 70% of the treatment is given completely free. Every year more than 1,500,000 tests are carried out in Pathology Laboratory. During year 2004, the Accident & Emergency department has treated 134,477 patients, which were not charged even a rupee for admission, tests or incase an operation is carried out. Just looking at these figures a person can easily estimate the amount of funds needed to run this mammoth hospital.

The management believes that once people, and specially the affluent class, feel that their funds are being judiciously spent, they will come back and give more. What you give might shift the balance of life in favor of a dying patient.

Washing clothes in Pakistan

Hardworking strong women of Pakistan’s rural areas afford the burden of washing clothes of the whole family. They collect carry the bundles of clothes, quilts and bed sheets to the nearby rivers or ponds and wash the clothes and enjoy the nature at its purest, while their kids enjoy swimming or showering in the water.

The following pictures are of such bold women of our country who are not aware of what goes on Pakistani and western media in their name.

Village Woman of Pakistan

Some may talk numerous negative things about Pakistani women folk but truth is Pakistani women in villages are heappy, healthy & hard working. They are very humble and down to earth folks they don’t controll their home like hitlar rather they raise the family with their men folk equally.

Villages of Pakistan are not talked about a lot as when we talk about Pakistan we only speak about the urban people who do not find much to do and do all sorts of ill things. The folks in the villages get up very early men go to their fields at about 6AM to do ploughing, harvesting or to wather the crops while women get their kids ready and cook for breakfast. Men usually return at 9 -10AM and do their breakfast.

Pakistan is a society where recycling is not a foreign thing every thing is used for or other purpose. The wheat straw is used for fodder, The stalk (Stem) of cotton is used for fire wood and even the animal dung is used for several purposes. Animal Dung is used for plastering walls with mixture of mud & straw. It is also used for Dung Cakes, Dung is dried on walls or on planes and when dry it is used as fire wood.

Ph.D Scholarship Programme for Pakistani Nationals

In 2006 Norway was included as a country of destination for candidates in Pakistan’s Overseas Scholarship Scheme for Ph.D. in Selected Fields.

The scheme is financed and administrated by the Pakistani Higher Education Commission (HEC).

HEC has made funding available for an unspecified number of scholarships per year for Ph.D. students going to Norway. The scholarship is fully covered by HEC for a maximum of 60 months and includes funding for travel and subsistence in addition to other specified costs pertaining to the candidates’ stay at Norwegian institutions. In return, scholarship recipients undertake to return to Pakistan with a Ph.D.-degree at the end of the specified period, and to serve in Pakistan for a period of at least 5 years. Failure to return with a Ph.D.-degree, or to comply with any other of the requirements specified make it incumbent on the graduates to repay the scholarship.

Please note that SIU does not accept applications to this programme. All inquiries regarding admissions and submission of applications to the programme should be directed to HEC.

Aim
The stated aim of the programme is to improve Pakistan’s national research capacity. Scholarship recipients will follow Ph.D. programmes in a partner country in the following disciplines: such as engineering and technology, life sciences, physical sciences, social sciences, business education, arts and humanities. The scholarship programme currently includes the following countries: Australia, Austria, China, France, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, UK and the United States.

Selection procedures
The scholarship programme is advertised nationwide in Pakistan. Applications are subject to a two-tiered selection process:

First all applicants undergo a preliminary selection process in Pakistan, including scrutiny of academic credentials, language testing and GRE-type testing.
Then, on the basis of written tests, a select number of applicants are called for an interview.
The applicants are assessed against various criteria in order to form an opinion of their aptitude for Ph.D. studies, degree of motivation, presentation skills, confidence, relevancy of the research proposal, and possibilities to place them in Norwegian institutions. Interviews in the final selection round are conducted by SIU and HEC together. Final admission will be subject to rules and regulations governing higher education in Norway and remains the sole responsibility of Norwegian institutions.

SIU’s role
SIU acts as national programme office in Norway. This includes assistance with placement of qualified candidates, further contact with host institutions to ensure adequate welfare, required insurance, provide student counselling, monitoring of performance, make payments to the scholarship recipients and the host institutions, and make substantive and financial reports to HEC. If there are problems while scholarship recipients are studying, SIU can propose solutions and advise HEC accordingly.

Pakistani Girl Gets Scholarship from L’Oreal

lshrat BANO a PhD student in Bionanotechnology at the Quaid-I-Azam University in Islamabad, Pakistan has been selected for L’Oreals fellowship at University of Cambridge UK

Her research focuses on the practical applications of nanotechnology in medicine.

Nanoparticles are particles with dimensions of iess than 100nm (a nanometer is one-biliionth of a meter} and are attracting a lot of interest in the field of drug development. Their small size and ability to transport drugs directly to target locations open up many possibilities for more efhcient and effective drug delivery, particularly in cancer patients.

Ishrat Bano is looking into the use of magnetic narioparticles in drug delivery. These offer the additional advantage of being more easily directed to diseased tissue through the use of an external magnetic field to direct the particles. Because they can target so efficiently, they also reduce the quantity of drug required to reach the appropriate concentration in the target location, therefore minimizing severe side effects in other, healthy parts ofthe body. However, magnetic particles have a tendency to stick together and cause potential blockage in the tiny capillaries of the blood system.

lt is therefore essential that the particles used are superparamagnetic — only exhibiting magnetism in the presence of an external magnetic field. During her fellowship she will receive training in the synthesis of magnetic nanoparticles adapted to drug delivery.

The ability of these particles to transport drugs is affected by acidity, temperature and the binding sites on the drug moIecuIe`s surface. She will test different methods of drug binding using insulin as a model protein drug and, using acidic solutions to simulate the conditions found in the stomach, she will also test the stability ofthe insulin-loaded particles and their ability to release the drug.

On return to Pakistan, Ishrat Bano will complete her PhD studies and then, as a postdoctoral researcher, she hopes to have the chance to make an important contribution tothe field of drug delivery using bionariotechnology.

Pakistani Girls should apply for L’Oreal’s scholarship & fellowships which run every year. More details can be found on L’Oreals web site at http://www.loreal.com Please also keep visiting this site for special announcemnts for such oppartunities by different sources.

History Indraprastha College For Women Delhi India

As the winds of history swept overIndia in the early years of the last century, a group of local theosophists, led by Lala Jugal Kishore responded to the challenge to bring Indian women out of the purdah and into the classroom. Indraprastha Girls School was founded in 1904 - a hopeful beginning in Chhipiwara in the old city of Delhi.

Parents had to be coaxed to send their daughters to school and purdah was strictly observed, but the founders persisted doggedly in establishing the school and encouraging the young girls to join.

In 1924, Intermediate classes were introduced and the University of Delhi, itself founded in 1922, recognised the Indraprastha Girls College, later to become famous all over the country as the Indraprastha college for Women, our present name. Degree courses were introduced in 1930'sand in 1938,the University recognised I.P. as a degree college. A committed band of philanthropists - Lala Bal Krishan Das, Lala Pyare Lal, Lala Sultan Singh and Dr. Ram Kishore among them - provided every kind of assistance to supplement a small endowment fund contributed by citizens of Delhi to keep the struggling institution on its feet.

Housed in Chhipiwara in the early years, followed by a stint in Chandrawali Bhawan, Civil lines, the College eventually moved to Alipur House, the former office of Commander-in-Chief in 1938, which it still inhabits.

In a University famed for the architecture of some of its older colleges, Indraprastha College stands out for the stately beauty of its sprawling, single storey red and yellow building. In 2002 Indraprastha College has been marked as the Heritage Building by the Government of Delhi and is going to be maintained by the Government itself. Green lawns, ancient trees, a multitude of small birds (even by the occasional peacock!) and a riot of flowers and ferns mark the college as one of the most beautiful spots in the city. Additions have been made to the building over the years, most notably the library, the gymnasium, the hostel, the cafeteria, the auditorium and classrooms . Audio visual centre and three well equipped Computer Labshave been added very recently to accommodate our entry into the world of computers. A college archive has also been setup where the history of IP College has been displayed with old photographs and documents. Yet none of these additions impinge on the grandeur of the original building, and this serves as a symbol of what Indraprastha College stands for : the ability to guard its sense of history and tradition while opening itself to the growing demands of successive generations of students and teachers.

Location Indraprastha College For Women Delhi India

Indraprastha College is strategically located 2 km from the Kashmere Gate Inter State Bus Terminal to the North East and Old Secretariat to the North West. It is 3 km away from the Delhi University Vice Chancellor's office.

The College is set close to the banks of the Yamuna river next to the statuesque Ring Road amidst calm and sylvan surroundings. Metro station of Civil Lines is next to the college boundary wall and has made commuting easy and fast.

Today, we have over 2000 students, 200 of whom reside in our hostel. The College also helps outstation students find safe and comfortable paying guest accommodation near the premises.

Our faculty of 100 teachers is among the most committed in the University. Many of our staff are well known academics with several publications to their credit.
